Dynamic macromolecular composition and high exudation rates in Prochlorococcus

چکیده

Every living cell is composed of macromolecules such as proteins, DNA, RNA, and pigments. The ratio between these macromolecular pools depends on the allocation resources within organism to different physiological requirements, in turn affects biogeochemical cycles elements carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus. Here, we present detailed measurements composition Prochlorococcus MIT9312, a representative strain globally abundant marine primary producer, it grows declines due nitrogen starvation laboratory batch cultures. As cells reached stationary stage declined, protein per decreased by ~ 30% whereas RNA pigments 75%. decline was associated with appearance chlorotic cells, which had higher forward scatter (a proxy for size) but lower chlorophyll autofluorescence, well changes photosynthetic pigment composition. Specifically, during culture divinyl-chlorophyll-like emerged, were not observed exponential growth. These also natural samples from Eastern Mediterranean. Over 90% carbon fixed MIT9312 (but strain, NATL2A) released into growth media under conditions. Variations RNA/protein indicate that, broadly defined, more similar eukaryotic phytoplankton than heterotrophic bacteria, possibly significant investment machinery phototrophs.

Fungal communities influence root exudation rates in pine seedlings.

Root exudates are hypothesized to play a central role in belowground food webs, nutrient turnover, and soil C dynamics in forests, but little is known about the extent to which root-associated microbial communities influence exudation rates in trees. We used a novel experimental technique to inoculate loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings with indigenous forest fungi to examine how diverse f...

Influence of light, temperature and salinity on dissolved organic carbon exudation rates in Zostera marina L.

BACKGROUND Marine angiosperms, seagrasses, are sentinel species of marine ecosystem health and function. Seagrass carbon budgets provide insight on the minimum requirements needed to maintain this valuable resource. Carbon budgets are a balance between C fixation, growth, storage and loss rates, most of which are well characterized. However, relatively few measurements of dissolved organic carb...

Root-induced changes in nutrient cycling in forests depend on exudation rates

(1) While it is well-known that trees release carbon (C) to soils as root exudates, the factors that control the magnitude and biogeochemical impacts of this flux are poorly understood. (2) We quantified root exudation and microbially-mediated nutrient fluxes in the rhizosphere for four ~80 year-old tree species in a deciduous hardwood forest, Indiana, USA. We hypothesized that trees that exude...

Phylogenetic Diversity in the Macromolecular Composition of Microalgae

The elemental stoichiometry of microalgae reflects their underlying macromolecular composition and influences competitive interactions among species and their role in the food web and biogeochemistry. Here we provide a new estimate of the macromolecular composition of microalgae using a hierarchical Bayesian analysis of data compiled from the literature. The median macromolecular composition of...
